Why make one subcompact cars when you could make two? That must have been Chevrolet’s thinking, and it makes sense. These two models are obviously designed for different buyers. The Spark is a subcompact hatchback, lighter, shorter, more affordable, and boasting a more versatile cabin. On the other hand, the Sonic is longer, more spacious on the inside, and more conventional in look. There are definite advantages either way you go, but we’ll focus on why the smaller Chevy Spark might be just what you need.
Affordability: 2020 Chevy Spark
Affordability: 2020 Chevy Spark
For one thing, and most obviously, the 2020 Chevy Spark is the more affordable of the two. The 2020 Spark starts at just $14,320. But that doesn’t leave you without goodies. Every Spark offers rearview camera, 7-inch touchscreen, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, USB connectivity, and four-speaker audio system, along with Chevrolet's OnStar communications system that includes 4G LTE in-car Wi-Fi hotspot.
On the other hand, the 2020 Chevy Sonic starts at $16,720, and comes with cloth upholstery, rearview camera, and infotainment system with 7-inch touch screen, four-speaker audio system, Bluetooth, USB ports, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and Wi-Fi hotspot. If that list of features looks surprisingly similar, it is. The difference is that the Sonic is a couple feet longer and 600 pounds heavier. More metal, more money. But the size of the car is only part of the story, which brings us to our next point.
Fuel Economy: 2020 Chevy Spark
Since we’re talking about subcompacts, good gas mileage is par for the course. But the smaller Spark really shines here. The 2020 Chevy Spark gets 30 city miles and 38 highway miles per gallon. Compare that to the Chevy Sonic, which gets 26 city and 34 highway miles per gallon, and realize you could be saving hundreds of dollars in fuel costs every year. Something to think about.
Ride and Handling: 2020 Chevy Spark
It’s easy to see the Chevy Spark is most at home in the city. This subcompact was made for downtown driving with a turn radius that makes mincemeat of U-turns, it has a short frame to fit in any parking spot, and it navigates a tricky traffic jam like it’s a cakewalk. Thanks to a nicely tuned suspension, minor to major bumps are almost nonexistent to the Spark’s occupants.
So, if you’re looking for affordable, fuel-thrifty, maneuverable, and more, get the 2020 Chevy Spark. Unless you need the rear seat for someone other than kids or pets, the Spark makes a lot of sense.
